Social Media Disinformation Really Good At Putting Us On Road To Authoritarianism

So many ways Trump and the GOP are using social media to
create an authoritarian/oligarchial regime for the United States
Last fall, journalist McKay Coppins of The Atlantic, decided to try a little experiment.

He created a Facebook page, not for himself, but for an alter ego. He picked a forgettable name, and posted a profile photo that obscured his face.  He clicked "Like" on the official pages of Donald Trump and his re-election campaign.

Almost immediately the Facebook algorithms prompted him to follow Ann Coulter, Fox and fan pages with titles like "In Trump We Trust." He dutifully followed these groups.

Coppins also wrote, "I also gave my cellphone number to the Trump campaign, and joined a handful of private Facebook groups for MAGA diehards, one of which required an application that seemed designed to screen out interlopers."

The Facebook feed that Coppins' alter ego established created a new reality of sorts. Coppins watched live, on TV, the impeachment hearings, but on the Facebook page, edited video made the same televised testimony look like an exoneration of Trump.

Pro-Trump propaganda filled the Facebook feed, "Democrats are doing Putin's bidding," "The only message these radical socialists and extremists will understand is a crushing." and so on.

The resulting Atlantic article by Coppins had this startling paragraph:

"I was surprised by the effect it had on me. I'd assumed that my skepticism and media literacy would inoculate me against such distortions. But I soon found myself reflexively questioning every headline. I wasn't that I believed Trump and his boosters were telling the truth. It was that, in this state of heightened suspicion, truth itself - about Ukraine, impeachment, or anything else - felt more and more difficult to locate. With each swipe, the notion of observable reality drifted further out of reach."

If a seasoned, savvy journalist like Coppins felt disoriented, imagine how everybody else feels against this social media onslaught.   His article opens a window on how easy social media, especially bad actors like Facebook, can much more easily allow us to slide into authoritarianism.  Ifyou think it can't happen here, think again.

To an extent, it's already happened, and the apparatus is set up to take us down the road to this evil transition.

Coppins' Atlantic article, "The Billion Dollar Disinformation Campaign To Re-Elect The President," is a long read, but something you should read, scary as it is.

This Facebook full-court press by the Trumpsters is a way of using a megaphone to drown out real truth, or as Coppins puts it, "jamming the signals, sowing confusion." Coppins said scholars call all this "censorship through noise."

Pretty much all political campaigns have their share of spin, half-truths, dog whistles and such.

Trump and his campaign take this to a whole, extremely scary new level.

A important part of this strategy is to first discredit the news media, you know, all the good, but imperfect journalists of the world who actually try to expose the truth, the real truth about everything.   Trump operatives have gone through the social media accounts belonging to hundreds of political journalists, compiling all their posts into dossiers.

Definitely sounds Putinesque, doesn't it?

When a particular news story the Trumps don't like is written by a particular journalist, they and their surrogates flood Facebook and other places with any past social media post the journalist wrote that could be spun as problematic or worse.

This isn't to combat a supposed or real liberal slant in the news media. This effort is to destroy mainstream media altogether.

We're not just talking about the tedious talking heads and columnists at national outfits like the New York Times, CNN, MSNBC and others.

They're after your local newscaster and newspaper. Coppins writes that the Trump campaign will train a "swarm of surrogates  to undermine local TV stations and newspapers. Polls have long fouond that Americans across the political spectrum trust local news more than the national media. If the campaign has its way, that trust will be eroded by November."

Meanwhile, these operatives are creating innocuous looking "news" sites like the Arizona Monitor or The Kalamazoo Times that look like traditional local publications, right down to community notices and school news and events schedules. Only very knowledgeable people, taking a close look at these "newspapers" will find no bylines and no addresses for local offices. And these "newspapers" will have plenty of sophisticated propaganda that sort of looks like news.

The Coppins article goes on about these details, and again, you really should read every word.

For Trump and his fascists minions, it's all about destroying all the the institutions that have held our democracy together for more than two centuries. They really do want to get rid of all the ideals about what makes America America.

That's why Trump is also seemingly pardoning every crooked person he can find, while at the same time punishing good citiziens and patriots.

He and his Republican toadies want to destroy the fact the United States, for all its faults, has been a beacon of freedom for the world.

This is particularly dangerous now as we seem to be at the begining of the Corornavirus pandemic. It's not officially a pandemic, but it's getting worse by the minute.  The whole world needs accurate and timely information to stay healthy, weather the economic crisis this will could bring on, and squash out rumors that could lead to civil unrest.

A lot of the citizenry of this nation seem like they think Trump and the Republicans are boffo for doing lying and trying to establish some sort of weird oligarchy.   They want to punish "the right people," i.e. anyone who is nonwhite and even remotely  liberal.

Sounds great to them.  Just wait until this new autocracy turns their powerand anger on them, for whatever reason.

Donald Trump Doth Protest Too Much As Russia Tries To Seize America

I hope this isn't reality, but it feels like it lately.
This is beginning to feel like a bad James Bond movie.

It's becoming more and more apparent that Russia, Wikileaks and maybe Trump or his minions are trying to turn the United States into a wholly owned subsidiary of Putin, Inc.

Unless we get a James Bond-like figure to save the day, I worry that this effort might succeed.

Friday, the nation got more details on the intelligence gathering that shows Russia was trying - and succeeded, apparently - at tilting our elections toward Donald Trump last November. Vladimir Putin was personally involved in some of this, apparently.

We have Trump get his top secret intelligence briefing on the issue, and still insisting that there wasn't much to the intelligence gathering that Russia did this...

Maybe most ominously, we got more evidence that WikiLeaks, far from being a way to prompt government and corporate transparancy world wide, is more like Putin's goon squad.

The news from WikiLeaks kept getting weirder and more ominous Friday.

First, WikiLeaks objected to Thursday leaks detailing parts of the intelligence report on Russia to NBC News.

WikiLeaks tweeted: "The Obama admin/CIA is illegally funneling TOP SECRET/COMINT information to NBC for political reasons before PEOTUS even gets to read it."

(POETUS refers to President-elect Trump.)

But get this: WikiLeaks was critcizing.......leaks. A little hypocritical maybe? Or was WikiLeaks just ,mad because the NBC leak had the potential to make Trump look bad.

Besides, it appears what got leaked to NBC News Thursday was the declassified version of the intelligence report that was widely released to the public Friday.

Much more ominously, WikiLeaks seemed to issue a warning of a witch hunt against journalists and others who discuss, investigate or report on Russian meddling.

Which is interesting, since Trump himself called reports of Russian influence on the U.S. election as  political witch hunt, prompted by sour grapes among those who lost the election.

The worrisome potential WikiLeaks, went like this, as Ars Technica reports:

"A Friday Twitter post from WikiLeaks' official task force declared intent to build a publicly seachable database revolving around a particular group of people: Verified Twitter accounts.

'We are thinking of making an online database with all verified Twitter accounts & their family/job/financial/housing relationships,' the Friday tweet reads.  A follow-up post sought suggestions fro the public and said the group is 'looking for discrete (father/shareholding/party membership variables that can be put into our AI software."

In short it appears that WikiLeaks might want to intimidate journalists into silence by "doxing" them. That means making their personal information such as home, family etc. public so goons who support  Trump can harass, threaten or even assault journalists or others who criticize Trump.

A very Russian thing to do, don't you think?  Suppress dissent, intimidate critics, stamp out free speech.

And WikiLeaks says they're for the truth? Ha!

I'm not sure what's in store once Trump takes office. Trump's constant dismissiveness of Russian hacking indicates either he wants to partner with Puting to squelched democracy, or more likely, Russia thinks Trump is a chump and has the goods on him.

Either way, this won't end well.

Let's hope people - and the media - fight efforts to stop the spread of information about who is influencing what in America, and holding on to the basics of democracy.

It's interesting that an outfit like WikiLeaks which says they want information freely available now so obviously shilling for such an anti-freedom outfit like Russia.

Once press freedom and freedom of speech is suppressed, which seems to be the effort underway, we all sink under the thumb of oppressive dictators.

I hope the resistance is stronger

Trump keeps calling the news about Russian hacking "a political witch hunt."

Trump appears to have gotten a number of important details wrong about the NBC story. No one “gave” NBC the top-secret report, as Trump claimed. As the NBC story notes, the official quoted by the network never even saw a copy of the intelligence report; he or she just repeated to NBC what someone had said about its findings.
On Friday morning, Trump told The New York Times that the ongoing public interest in possible Russian interference in the presidential election was “a political witch hunt.” He also complained the election-hacking story was getting more attention than other instances where government computers were compromised. These previous hacks, however, did not include releasing the stolen information to the public.

Welcome To The (Permanent) Oligarchy

This man might have just killed American constitutional democracy
and the American voters let him.
Yesterday, the American people threw away the Constitution and many of the freedoms they assumed would be there forever.

Many voters wanted that outcome. The people that supported Trump agreed with him that niceties like press freedom, religous freedom (unless you're a Christian!) and due process just got in the way of, well, I don't know, but apparently they thought it got in the way of something.

The majority of voters just wanted an authoritarian who steamrolls through everything, legal or not.

America, you made your choice. What you don't realize is, if you find out you don't like your choice,  you'll never be able to change it. Think you can vote in a new Congress two years from now, or a new President four years from now ?

Hah!

Trump and his Republican minions now control everything, including the Supreme Court. If Trump sets the nation on a disastrous course, there's nothing we can do about it.

Trump and Co. will surely change voting laws to severely restrict the vote among people who might not want him to continue in office. That's what right wind oligarchs do. Team Trump will lie and lie to its gullible supporters, so that dwindling crowd will keep him in for a long, long time.

Maybe after eight years, Trump will make is so he has a third term. Or one of his henchmen will become President when he's done. Surely it won't be someone in favor of true democracy.

If Trump becomes involved in misdeed, we probably won't find out what Trump might be doing wrong. Yes, the media has its problems but we won't have investigative journalism, as it will be suppressed if not outright banned.

Team Trump team will suppress dissension. Taking it to the streets for peaceful demonstrations against him might someday become illegal. Or at least always be met with rubber bullets or worse.

So much for Free Speech. Right wing authoritarians suppress dissension any way they can.

I've already criticized Trump a lot, so it's part of my permanent record. The Internet is forever. I literally think I might be in jail or at least facing an expensive lawsuit within two years. Not because of what I will do, but because of what I have done - criticize and mock Trump.   (I'm still criticizing him now because I have nothing to lose. The damage is done.)

I wouldn't be surprised if people are jailed for criticizing his government some day. Or at the very least the more likely threat of jail or lawsuits will suppress any kind of vocal opposition.

If a Trump presidency impoverishes you or otherwise harms you, there's nothing you can do. If you have Muslim or Hispanic friends, there's a chance you'll have to say bye bye to some of them. If America doesn't become "great again," as Trump promised, too bad. You lose.

You made your choice America. Now you have to live with it.

Permanently.

Inspiring "Imagine" Moment From Paris Rally

During the largest demonstration in French history, some of the 1.5 million people marching for freedom and peace broke into singing John Lennon's "Imagine."

Gives one hope in a brutal world:

Sabine Parish, Louisiana Public Schools Basically A Torturous, Fundamentalist Christian Re-Education Camp, Says ACLU

Sabine Parish, Louisiana sounds like a hellhole. Especially it's schools.
The picture of Jesus in the Sabine, Louisiana
PUBLIC school is a nice touch, isn't it?

I say this assuming that a recent ACLU lawsuit is even 10 percent accurate.

Basically the school district, its teachers and students are mentally torturing a Buddhist middle schooler because he is not a fundamentalist Christian like everybody else there seems to be, according to the lawsuit

Writing in an ACLU blog, Scott Lane discusses the lowlights his Buddhist stepson has been experiencing in Sabine Parish, which appears to put new meaning into the terms "ignorant" and "insular"

Here's some of what Lane says:

"On a science test, their teacher had included a fill-in-the-blank question: 'ISN'T IT AMAZING WHAT THE _____________HAS MADE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'

When my stepson didn't know the answer ('Lord'), she belittled him in front of the entire class. When he wrote in 'Lord Buddha' on another exam, she marked it wrong.

As she was returning that exam to stuents, one student proclaimed aloud that 'people are stupid if they think God is not real.'  In response, my stepson's teacher agreed, telling the class: 'Yes! That is right! I had a student miss that on his test' The entire class broke out in laughter at my stepson."

First, let's just stop here and ponder the ALLCAPS and the zillions of exclamation points the teacher put on the test question. There's your red flag right there, never mind all this God stuff.

Secondly, are you being a good Christian if you pick on middle school boys because they don't exactly share your beliefs? Like I said, this sounds like a pretty hellish school, oddly enough, with all the talk about heaven and Jesus that seem to go on there.

OK, Scott Lane, go on with your story of Negreet High School in Sabine Parish, please:

"The same teacher also told our children that the Bible is '100 percent true', that the Earth was created by God 6,000 years ago, and that evolution is 'impossible' and a 'stupid theory made up by stupid people who don't want to believe in God.' She's also told the class that Buddhism is 'stupid.'

Wow! A lot of things are stupid in the bleakly dim mind of this Sabine Parish teacher. Yes, yes, I know the real stupid item here is the teacher, but what the hell.

OK Scott Lane, the teacher was just a weird anomaly right? I'm sure you went to the superintendent and got everything straightened out, right?
The ACLU is suing a Louisiana school district
because they said they don't believe children
should be indoctrinated in fundamentalist
Christian doctrine if they don't want it.

Well, no. Lane writes:

"She was dismissive and told us that we live in the 'Bible Belt' and that this is just how things are. She added that, because she was not offended by the fact that 'the lady who cuts (her) toenails has a statue of Buddha' we should not be upset by the blatant proselytizing at Negreet or the bullying and harassment of our son and the degradation of his Buddhist faith."

Is it requirement to be excessively ignorant and stupid to work in Sabine Parish schools? This is reading like a bad TV sitcom.  On the bright side, I'm glad we don't know more about the toenail cutter's Buddha in the text of the ACLU lawsuit.

Lane said he tried to point out that the "Bible Belt" is not a separate country (at least not yet!) and the family was still entitled to religious liberty as guaranteed by the Constitution.

The superintendent suggested the kid change his faith or go to another school that, as she allegedly put it "has more Asians"

Yeah, go to that heathen school with those "different," i.e. non-white people!

Lane did take up the superintendent's suggestion that the kid go to that other school, the one tainted by those awful Asians, but the middle schooler got the You Must Turn Christian abuse there, too.

Back at the original school, Lane's kid also had to walk passed all these pictures of Jesus, prayers, and all the fixins' at a real old time religious school. But remember, this was supposed to be a public school.

Lane says he's fine with people who hold deep Christian beliefs. And he's fine with people talking about those religious beliefs.  It's just that a public school should let his Buddhist kid of Thai descent have his religious beliefs too.

Oh, and maybe teach science in science class instead of some perversion of religion. That would be nice, too.

According to the ACLU lawsuit against the Sabine school district, science teacher Rita Roark is said to have skipped the entire textbook section on evolution, saying, "If evolution was real, it would still be happening. Apes would be turning into humans today."

Riiight....Or quote, unquote science teachers would be turning into something much more ignorant than apes.

The school district, responding to the ACLU lawsuit, says it respects the right of anyone to express their religious beliefs.

We'll see where that goes, especially if the suit comes to trial, and/or the U.S. Justice Department and U.S. Education Department gets involved, which might happen.

Again, if the ACLU lawsuit has any accuracy, it's amazing that in this day in age public school kids are being taught this crap.

We need every smart kid out there to keep America competitive in this world, and some twisted religious nuts insist on not letting that happen.

Cripes, God gave us the brains to learn, to question, to discover, to get smarter. Somehow I doubt we'd have all that if God didn't want us to find out about the world around us.

So let's get out of the way and let the kids learn instead of imposing some closed minded dogma on them.

Why Homeowner Associations Annoy (Ctd.)

In the latest salvo in how neighborhood associations hate it, hate it, when any hint of personality or quirks invade their streets, a family is in trouble out near Denver because a three year old girl has been using chalk to draw pictures on sidewalks.
This dog, which fell asleep on a sidewalk chalk drawing,
shows the danger HOAs are trying to protect us from.

Apparently, the chalk violates an edict againast "anything that offends, disturbs or interferes with the peaceful enjoyment" of the neighborhood, according to a subcommittee of the neighborhood association in the development, on what was the old Stapleton Airport property.

Because, as we know anything beyond the bland beiges of the neighborhoods and the most boring of landscaping violates the peaceful enjoyment of the neighborhood.  And chalk drawings of flowers and dogs and houses are really offensive, even if the drawings wash away in the next rainfall.

Could you imagine the heart attack the neighborhood association would have with my house?  Stone walls, made of found rocks from the side of the road, are scattered around my property. I haven't finished building some of them yet.

Flowers and plants are placed randomly around the yard, just because it just felt right to put particular plants where they are. And worst of all, I have a clothes line!

I get Homeowners' Associations, known also as HOA's. Done right, they help prevent one homeowner from having 12 derelict cars up on blocks amid weeds as tall as an NBA player. And who wants a neighbor who's driveway is littered with the beer cans and used Trojans accumulated from their nighttly parties that blast on until dawn?

Supposedly, about 20 percent of all U.S. homes fall under HOA rules, and presumably, most of them are OK.

When they get out of control, I thank gawd I don't have an HOA harassing me. I found an old Gawker article detailing some of the worst abuses. Among them:

--A guy spent $200,000+ in legal fees to combat an HOA edict that he couldn't park his pickup truck in his own driveway. As the article points out, the guy won, but the HOA probably jacked up homeowners' fees to pay for the ruling against it, so now everybody who lives there hates the pickup truck guy.

---Another homeowner got in trouble with his HOA because he had Marine decals on his car, again parked in his own driveway.

--A Colorado homeowner got in trouble because she hung a Christmas wreath shaped like a peace sign. The wreath was "divisive," according to the HOA. Yeah, we know how many people hate, HATE peace, especially around Christmas.

--A Florida retiree went to jail because his HOA got a court to order him to resod his lawn, which had pretty much died. He couldn't afford to fix it, but too bad, he went to jail. Since people who don't take care of their lawns are worse than child molesters, right? Because green lawns are more important than God, right?

Eventually, friends and neighbors collected money to fix the God Almighty Lawn, and the retiree was sprung from the pokey.

I know this is more difficult than leaving it to an HOA, but if my neighbors do something obnoxious, I can start by going over and talking to them and working out a solution. If that doesn't work, there's always the zoning board.

And besides, who has time to worry if there's an extra car in the driveway, or they paint their house a color I don't like?  I can close the window shade, or plant a bush obscuring the view of the offending house. Problem solved.

But that's not the American way.  Messy lawsuits are, I guess.
