Taking The Morning Train To A Dance Party

The guy in the bow tie knows how to start a party.
Commuter trains can be fairly grim places and people expressionlessly wait to arrive at their destinations, or bury their noses in their smart phones, just waiting for the trip to end.

A guy named Peter Sharp in Perth, Australia would have none of it. So he dressed up in a tux, and with a powerfully friendly demeanor, managed to start a dance party.

Looks pretty fun. I hope this guy is on my flight to Washington DC later this week.

Watch (but you might have to click on the underlined "Watch on YouTube" to actually see it:)

Fun With Huge Bonfires On A Rainy Night During Foliage Season

Steam, an otherworldly glow and ghostly
people at a bonfire in Shrewsbury, Vermont last night.
Last night, I was at a huge party at my sister Laurie's house, and her partner Bennie, in rural Shrewsbury, Vermont.

As you read down, you'll get an explanation of the ghostly photos in this post. Some explanation is in order.

Laurie's parties tend to be huge affairs that go late into the night. There's plenty of music, food, and LOTS of booze.

(It's OK, there's also lots of designated drivers, or people who just crash on couches for the night.)

The party was a huge hit, despite the fact it rained torrentially through most of the event.

We huddled under tents with good buddies like Dr. McGillicuddy, Dr. Jagermeister,  and some home grown concoctions.  Although, to be honest, at my age I wasn't able to handle much beyond some nice Vermont microbrew.

There were two guys, one a singer and guitarist, the other, a handsome young man playing spoons incredibly expertly.

The pair played mostly country standards, and were surprisingly talented and engaging.

There was a lot of dancing, but I don't think anybody there would be a finalist on "So You Think You Can Dance."

Especially not the woman in the pink sweater and the clear garbage bag she was using as a raincoat. She was drunk enough to kind of look like those blow up signs and figures that wave wildly in front of used car lots.

I did think the big huge burly guy wearing the hard hat while dancing might have been the smartest person at the party.

People were especially enthusiastic when the two guys played Garth Brook's "Friends in Low Places." It was that kind of party. In other words, raucus, not exactly fancy, but very, very, very fun.

Saturday night in Shrewsbury, Vermont.
Another odd highlight was when the two guys played that song from the early 1960s about a teenage couple who gets in a car crash and the girl dies.

It's called "Oh Where Can My Baby Be." It's totally cheesy, which is why the guys played the song

It was hilariously odd to see people dancing with drunken joy to a stupid, melodramatic song about a car crash. You had to be there, though, to get the full effect.

A centerpiece of Laurie and Bennie parties is usually an immense bonfire. Such was the case last night, despite the rain soaking everything so thoroughly it was hard to get a fire going at first.

But it did get going.

I loved the ghostly images it caused with the flames spiking up into the rain pouring down, the smoke, the sparks, the glow of the fire on the fall foliage, the steam from the fire's heat hitting everything wet.

Of course, it was hard to take photos of this with an iPhone in the rain after a few beers, but I tried. They're amateurish, but I got a few otherworldly images that I kind of like in a weird sort of way.

So they're in this post. As always, click on any image you're interested in to get a bigger, better look.

Highway Traffic Jam Leads To Awesome Highway Jam Session

The world's most fun traffic jam, on I-76
near King of Prussia, Pa. last weekend.
Last Saturday, a car crash brought traffic on Interstate 76 near King Of Prussia, Pennsylvania to a standstill.

Annoying traffic jams happen all the time, so this bit of news would be unremarkable, except for what happen next.

Meteorologist Justin Berk was among those caught in the traffic jam. The tie-up lasted so long people started getting out of their cars, maybe out of boredom, to commiserate, or for some air.

Berk said he met two musicians, David Gettes and Paul Downie from the Trinidad North Steel Drums, who were probably going to miss the gig they were headed to, because of this traffic jam.

Berk sets the scene in a blog item he posted after the traffic jam:

"I saw an opportunity for some fun and glad I was able to convince them to break out their instruments right there on the highway. It didn't take much to reach the same conclusion that it would make a lot of people happy and pass the time better than just being frustrated.

With all due respect to the people involved in the crash, we felt bad, but there was nothing we could do about it."

The fun video of the incident is below. It looked like an awesome party. And I like how people who surely had never met before this seemed to be getting along wonderfully.

Note toward the end of the video when traffic started moving again that people were disappointed the party ended and they had to get back in their cars.

Next time I get caught in a traffic tie-up, I hope it's this fun.

Here's the video:

Red Solo Cup: A New Icon is Born

Not feeling that great this New Year's Day morning?

Could the blahs be the results of what you drank out of your red Solo cup last night?
Nothing says Booze Fest like red Solo cups, that staple of frat parties and blowouts for decades.

Red Solo cups are now a National icon, thanks to those countless parties, and now a hit song by Toby Keith.
The celebrated party staple
red Solo cup

Keith puts into words what every partier is thinking, even if said partier doesn't even realize he or she is thinking:

Red solo cup, you’re more than just plastic
You’re more than amazing, you’re more than fantastic
And believe me that I’m not the least bit sarcastic
When I look at you and say
Red solo cup, you’re not just a cup
(No! No! No! God, no!)
You’re my, you’re my friend."
All this love for a beer cup. Hey, you gotta appreciate something.
And all this publicity doesn't hurt the Solo Company, which celebrated its 75th anniversary in 2011 just as Keith's song came out.

Even National Public Radio gave notice to Red Solo cups last month, doing a full article on how the containers are now a staple of parties all over the place.

All for a red plastic cup that contains cheap beer and leads to hangovers.

But it's all worth it. Red Solo cups, or at least the stuff they contain, are the lubricants for our parties. So party on with your red Solo cup, and Happy New Year
