A Sinkhole Turns Into A Bank Robbery Investigation

This "sinkhole" in a Florida bank driveway turned out to be part
of a tunnel. Somebody was digging the tunnel in an attempt
to rob the bank.
As will become obvious, given Florida's weirdness, the following incident took place in the Sunshine State.

A sinkhole recently opened up in the driveway of a Pembroke Pines, Florida bank. That's not unusual. The geology of Florida makes the area prone to sinkholes.

It turns out, though, that geology had nothing to do with this sinkhole. It turns out somebody was digging a tunnel from an embankment toward the bank in an attempt to rob it.

But: Curses! Foiled again! The tunnel was too close to the surface. The dirt and the pavement in the driveway collapsed, which was the "sinkhole."

They haven't figured out who dug the tunnel yet. The tunnel extends 50 feet from an embankment to near the bank. It looks like whoever it was was trying to access an ATM.

The person who dug the tunnel wasn't claustrophobic, apparently. The tunnel was only two feet across or so, so you really had to shimmy and squeeze your way through it.

The FBI is investigating.

And thus, Florida continues to uphold its reputation for weirdness.

Giant Sinkhole Disappears In Days Due To Japanese Efficiency

How long do you think it would take to repair this
giant sinkhole? For the Japanese, just a few days, it turns out. Add caption
Back on November 8, a giant sinkhole opened up on a very busy street in the Japanese city of Fukuoka.

The sinkhole, 98 feet across and 50 feet deep, might have been triggered by nearby railroad tunnel construction.

Luckily, nobody was hurt, but the sinkhole cut electricity and gas service to parts of the busy neighborhood.

But, in just a few days, the busy street was back open, stronger than ever. The city said the street was built with a much more sturdy sub-base than the sand that was there beforehand.

Watch this fascinating time lapse of how quickly the city fixed the sinkhole and got the city of Fukuoka back to normal in just days:

Sharp-Eyed Cop Prevents Sinkhole Disaster

This cop in China spotted a weird crack in the road
at a major intersection. He then prevented LOTS
of problems
There's a wicked busy, congestion main road in the large city of Hangzhou, China, where traffic slows to a crawl at a major intersection.

Recently, a cop there noticed what seemed to him to be an odd, worrisome crack right in the middle of the intersection.

Security cameras caught what came next. He was nervous enough about it, to direct all the traffic around the crack.

He got his cop cohorts to grab some orange traffic cones and place them around the crack in the road, so drivers would go around them.

This caused quite a little traffic backup and probably some steamed motorists who had to maneuver around the cones.

But good thing. Had it not been for this cop, things would have gotten worse for some motorists than some annoying traffic cones:

Sinkhole Grabs People Minding Their Own Business At Bus Stop

These people aren't on as solid ground as they think.
A bunch of people were milling around a bus stop in China this week, as people tend to do.

The problem is, the ground would have nothing to do with it.  In a dramtic video, we see a sinkhole open up beneath the crowd.

Five people were hurt, none seriously.

No word on what caused the sinkhole

Here's the video from a nearby security camera:

Cars Stuck In Traffic, Sinkhole Opens Beneath Them

At least one motorist stuck in a traffic jam in a Tyuman, Russia, about 1,600 east of Moscow, almost dealt with disaster recently.

Yeah, jams are frustrating, but they are infuriating when the road starts to collapse beneath you and the other cars will Just. Not. Move. Out. Of. The. Way.

At the last second the cars did move, saving the day. But SCARY!

Freaky!!! Trees Sink Out Of Sight In Louisiana Bayou

I imagine Louisiana bayous are scary places. God knows what kinds of creatures live there, what odd things happen amid the humidity and the mosquitoes and the swampy tangle of vegetation.
Aerial view of Bayou Corne sinkhole in
Louisiana which yielded the dramatic video in
this post.

Well, we got one window into that today.

In a video that's spreading like wildfire, we see a bunch of big trees sink out of sight in Bayou Corne,  as if tugged down underground by a huge beast living down under.

Amazing to watch them go straight down. It's part of a large sinkhole that appeared more than a year ago, and the edges of it continue to collapse. One of those collapses explains these trees going away.

The sinhole is now 25 acres in size, according to The Advocate in Louisiana. The edges of it could continue collapsing for years.

Here's the wild video: Makes you not want to take a canoe into a marsh or pond anymore.
