Nine Year Old Activists Overturns Anti-Snowball Fight Ordinance

In front of a packed Severerance, Colorado Town Board meeting, Dane
Best, 9, lobbies comuunity leaders to overturn a ban on snowball
fights. Photo by Sara Knuth/Greely Tribune
I love it when kids re-enact the plot in the fictional movie "Footloose," in which a teenager gets a town to overturn a ban on dancing.

The situation I'm about to describe isn't exactly dancing, but it's still nice to see somebody overturning a stupid local ordinance.

The town of Severance, Colorado has long banned snowball fights. C'mon! Colorado in the winter? You gotta have snowball fights!

Enter Severance resident Dane Best, 9, who decided he CAN fight City Hall. And, spoiler: He won.

According to the Greeley Colorado Tribune, Best gave this simple but perfect argument before the Severance Town Board:

"The children of Severance want the opportunity to have a snowball fight like the rest of the world....The law was created many years ago. Today's kids need a reason to play outside."

BOOM!

You can't get a more persuasive argument than that. Why not let the kids of Severance experience the joys of children everywhere. At least in places where it snows And in this age of kids staying inside playing video games to the detriment to their physical health, wouldn't you want children to go outside and be active?

The anti-snow ball ordinance was part of an otherwise perfectly reasonable law that banned throwing missiles or stones at people or property. It's still illegal in Severance to throw stones and missiles, as it is in most if not all of America. Best didn't want the town to overturn that part of the law, and he promised never to throw a snowball with a rock inside.

But the snowball piece of the Severance ordinance is now officially off the books. After the Town Board meeting, the Greeley Tribune said Best and his little brother Dax, 4, went outside into Severance's snowy streets and threw the first legal snow balls in the town's history.

Severance Mayor Don McLeod also got into the act and tossed a snow ball or two.

This whole thing leads to a larger lesson for Best and any kid out there. Yes, you can change an injustice, but only if you put some effort into it.

Bottom line: The kids are alright.

Worse Eight Hour Flight Ever

Worst flight ever? This kid apparently screamed like a demon
during an entire eight hour flight this past summer from
Germany to New Jersey. He also climbed over
everything, including sometimes, passengers.
Everybody's got stories of their Worst Flight Ever.

I think the people on an eight hour flight from Germany to New Jersey have one of the best stories.

A kid screamed like a demon during the entire flight. it really does sound like a horror movie. You can watch the video at the bottom of this post if you don't believe me.

This happened in August, but is getting more traction on line now.  The video tag line says the incident unfolded because the kid was addicted to technology and couldn't always have it, but I think more was going on.

This kid has problems. Screaming like that for a full eight hours? And climbing all over the seats and even people? Geesh!

Yes, we should be sympathetic to children who might have some sort of mental illness, but this still had to be The Worst for the rest of the people on the plane. I honestly don't know if the parents could have done their parenting job better, or that the kid might have autism or something else that made him uncontrollable.

This is only my opinion, but judging from the video, it didn't help that the mom seemed to try only half-heartedly to get the boy under control.  On some flights, I've had to deal with slightly unruly kids from time to time, but this is so out of control. My sympathies to the people who had to go through this.

Here's the video:

NASA Is Kidnapping Children, Taking Them To Mars

Alex Jones informs us that NASA is kidnapping children
and turning them into slaves on Mars
Lost amid the hubbub over Donald Trump's insulting tweets to Mika Brzezinski was the breaking news that NASA is kidnapping children, taking them to Mars and making them slaves there.

Yeah, that story sounds just a wee bit unbelievable, but Alex Jones says it's happening, so it must be true.

You might remember Alex Jones, who is fast becoming one of my favorite punching bags.

He's the blowhard from the conspiracy web site InfoWars who tells us the government is putting something in the water to make frogs gay, the Sandy Hook massacre never happened, and Hillary Clinton was running a child sex ring out of the basement of a Washington DC pizzeria.

You might think none of these things are true, but our Dear President is a big fan and even wants to give Alex Jones press credentials, so I guess we got to believe this stuff.

On his show Thursday, Jones welcomed "CIA insider" Robert David Steele who informed us, "We actually believe that there is a colony on Mars that is populated by children who were kidnapped and sent into space on a 20-year ride.... So that once they get to Mars they have no alternative but to be slaves on the Mars colony."

It was unclear from Jones' show why NASA is kidnapping children and sending them to Mars, but Jones, naturally is a believer. Jones said every time a probe is pointed in the direction of Mars, NASA shuts if off. Or something like that.

It gets worse. NASA is killing some of the children and using their blood and bone marrow as a sort of growth hormone. Again, we're not sure why.

As you might expect, NASA denies the allegations.  A NASA spokesman said, "There's only one stupid rumor on the internet? Now that's news."

Toronto Hospital For Sick Kids Has Ad That's Sick In A Great Way

A still from a great inspiration video from the Toronto
Hospital for Sick Chidren
The Toronto Hospital for Sick Children in Canada has struggled with its name.

Sounds depressing. A place where children go to suffer and be alone and have miserable lives.

Of course that's not the case. The hospital has put out a great new ad that turns the ill children at the hospital, and their parents, into superheroes.

That idea has been done before, but the way this ad works is incredible. Watch. It's awesome!

Kids Playtime Turns to Extreme Adventure Thanks To Hollywood Dad

Is this toddler clinging to the edge of a tall skyscraper?
Find out in the video in this post.
UPDATE: The video I origionally posted was deleted by YouTube for violating terms of service.

I don't know why, but a replacement video is available, which I've posted.'

ORIGINAL DISCUSSION:

This is what happens to a normal kids's playtime when his dad works in Hollywood.

Let's do a little CGI on the kid.

This is pretty wild and fun, but I'm sure as heck glad the kid wasn't really in any danger.

Just special effects.

Watch and enjoy!

Can't Resist Hero Dog Stories: Maxx Leads FIrefighters To Trapped Children In Fire

Maxx leading firefighters to two children
trapped in a burning Florida home.
The latest hero in the news is Maxx.

A house burst into flames one recent night in an Orlando suburb.

Arriving firefighters quickly realized that two children, ages four and two, were trapped somewhere in the large, flaming house, but they really didn't know where.

But Maxx, the family dog knew exactly where they were.

He led firefighters through thick smoke to where the children were, says television station WFLA and the Associated Press.

Everyone from the house, including Maxx, were seriously injured in the fire, mostly from smoke inhalation, but because of Maxx, everyone survived.

At last report Maxx was doing well.

A GoFundMe page has been set up for the family, and Maxx of course. As of Saturday morning, about $41,000 had been raised, which is great, especially given the huge hospital bills and rebuilding the family will have to face.

Hey, the family deserves the help, and Maxx sure could use a reward!

Good boy, Maxx!

Officer Joshua Kehm Real He Man; Able To Slam Kid To Floor

A police officer slams a misbehaving
12 year old girl to the ground, and its caught
on video. He'll get away with it.
UPDATE: 4/12/16

The school district at which Officer Joshua Kehm bodyslammed that 12 year old girl has fired him.

It also appears Kehm tried to weasel his way out of the mess he created, describing in his report the girl accidentally fell, which, as the school district says is "inconsistent" with the viral video.

I'll say!

Texas Rangers are investigating to see whether criminal charges ought to be brought against Kehm. I'm still not holding my breath on that one, but we'll see.

PREVIOUS DISCUSSION:

Details are scant but a video went viral this evening showing a school police officer in San Antonio viciously slamming what is said to be a 12-year-old girl to the ground.

In the video, we see the officer, identified as Joshua Kehm, lifting the girl off her feet, then slamming her to the ground with all his might.  The video is at the bottom of this post, if anyone wants to watch it.

I bet you do, Officer Kehm. It's maybe your finest moment.

You must be so proud of yourself, Officer Kehm! Wow! What a way to gain control and impress all the other kiddies around there.

Bet you hope she got hurt real good, doncha? That'll teach those snotty nosed kids to respect authority. YOUR authority. You with your broad shoulders and bulging biceps.

I bet it felt so good to slam the kid down like that. You won't be able to stop smiling for weeks, will you?

Oh, I know the kid was probably misbehaving. I actually agree with you that some kids are disrespectful, fight, misbehave and cause all kinds of trouble. Reports are she was fighting with another student. And she was struggling against you as you tried to pull her away, which I agree is a no-no.

So sure, discipline the kid, I'm all for that.

By the way, they've already disciplined her, fairly or not. The Associated Press said today that the grl has been suspended from school.

To you, though, the only alternative you saw was to slam the girl's face into the pavement, then lead her away, dazed and in cuffs.  No wussy detention or suspension from school for this kid. Beat her up instead!

Did you get a chance to punch her a couple times in the squad car, too?  Gotta reinforce your message!

Most cops aren't like you. But a few are. And you can relax. You'll totally get away with this. Just like the other cops who beat up misbehaving kids and teenagers. Or shoot them because they look like gang bangers, or might or might be carrying something that might or might not be gun, Or just because you're pissed off because the kid is walking out in the streets while black.

They'll investigate you, Offier Kehm. The school district says it's investigating, and if the school drops the ball, the local D.A. says he'll investigate.

Maybe they'll you a slap on the wrist, suspend you for a couple days. Just for PR purposes, until this blows over and the obnoxious journalists and social media people like me go away.

Then you'll be reassigned to another school, and you can go ahead and beat up another person. Hopefully this time, they'll have a ban on taking cell phone videos. You gotta get away with it, you know. You don't want any messy commentary.

Yeah, I'd love to hear your side of the story. I'll even add it to this post, just for fairness. But television station WOAI says you're not talking.  Stupid journalists, daring to ask you questions.

But you are SUCH A STUD, Officer Kehm! Don't forget to kick a dog or a cat, just for fun, on your way home. You want to stay in practice for the next kid that pisses you off, right?

Crime Fighting Kids Point Helicopter In Right Direction During Crime Manhunt

In this image from a British police helicopter, kids
on an Easter Egg hunt point the way, using their bodies,
toward two burglary suspects police were looking for.
Some kids in Surrey, England found a quick way to fight crime while out on an Easter Egg hunt.

Surrey Police were chasing down a couple of burglary suspects and the National Police Air Service had a helicopter in the air looking for the two men.

Several kids, ages six to 12, accompanied by parents,  spotted the police helicopter overhead and correctly guessed the cops in the air were looking for the two men the kids had seen earlier.

The kids quickly got down on the ground in a plowed field and formed an arrow with their bodies to point the helicopter in the right direction, Surry Police said.

The helicopter crew steered in the direction the human arrow was pointing and spotted the two crooks. They relayed that information to Surrey Police on the ground, who quickly arrested the pair.  .

"The swift action taken by the group of parents and their childres was the sort of thing you would usually associate with an Enid Blyton adventure, but their ingenuity proved a great help for our crews," said Sgt. Paul Sochon of the National Air Service Police.

After the chase, the helicopter landed so airmen aboard could thank the children. The children responded by sharing chocolate Easter treats with the crew from the helicopter.

All in all, a great day for everyone, except the burglers.

Here's a video of the incident taken from the NPAS helicopter:

Poor Marital Communication Part II: This One's Fun And Works Out Well

For the second time in two days, I found a case where
a woman returns home to find her husband made some
rather substantial changes to their home while she was gone.
In this case, nobody was particularly upset.
Yesterday, I wrote about the guy who is the WORST EVER at marital communication.

He's the guy who tore down the house he lived in with his wife, who owned the house. He didn't bother to mention to her ahead of time that he planned to do it.

 This did not end well.

Today, I found another example of an extreme lack of marital communication, but this one is much more positive.

In this new one,  the wife had gone away on errands for a good part of the day, much like the women whose husband tore down the house.

In this case, the husband, named Roman Atwood, stayed home with the kids, and when his wife called to check in during the day, Atwood said they were doing nothing special at home.

Atwood wasn't exactly being totally honest with his wife on this one.  Things weren't actually that boring at home.

Atwood is known for his prank videos, so you know things might not go as expected.

When the wife got home, she found her house radically different than when she left it. (kinda like the woman whose house got torn down by her husband.)

In this new case, however, they still have a place to live, and I have the distinct feeling that there is very, VERY little marital discord going on here. Plus the kids probably think he's the world's coolest dad.

After Handing Michelle Obama Dad's Resume, Girl AND Dad Should Get Hired

You have to hand it to this little girl.
Michelle Obama hugs the girl who gave the
First Lady her dad's resume.

The 10 year old was at the White House's annual "Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day."  Her mom works at the White House, but her dad is unemployed and looking for a job.

So the girl did what any sensible person would do. Go directly to the top.  When she got the chance to meet Michelle Obama, she handed the First Lady her father's resume.

"My dad's been out of a job for three years and I wanted to give you his resume," Charlotte Bell said.

Michelle Obama gave the girl a hug. The two chatted a bit and the event went on

When the thing was over, Obama was seen leaving the room, resume in hand, hopefully to give it to the White House HR director.

Maybe the dad AND the girl will get hired. After all, the kid showed initiative.

Kids Save Their Own Lives By Being Totally Obnoxious To Criminals

Kids can sure be annoying.
Willie Myrick, 9, and Hezekiah Walker. Willie
saved himself from a kidnapper by repeatedly singing
Walker's song "Every Praise."

The noise, the yelling, the hitting, the running around. It can be just too much.

Too much for criminals, anyway.

Two stories are circulating this weekend of kidnapped children who saved their own skin by being blessedly obnoxious.

In one case, blessedly is the operative word here.

Earlier this month, Willie Myrick, 9, was outdoors in the Atlanta, Georgia area when a man snatched him, shoved him into his car and took off.

Willie kept singing the gospel song "Every Praise" until the kidnapper got fed up with all that singing and pushed the kid out of the car, according to WMAZ in Macon, Georgia.

Willie told his church congregation later that the man kept cursing and telling him to shut up before eventually kicking him out. "He opened the door and threw me out...He told me not to tell anyone."

Well, I guess Jesus does save when you praise him.  Willie wasn't hurt, but police are still looking for the kidnapper.

On the bright side, Willie, who as you can tell is a huge gospel fan, got to meet the guy who wrote the song "Every Praise" The songwriter, Hezekiah Walker, heard the story and showed up at the church to sing the song with Willie and the rest of the congregation.

Note: The is the first time I've heard "Every Praise," since I don't follow gospel music. Not a bad song, so thanks, Willie, for introducing it to me.

Meanwhile, in San Antonio, a car containing two twin boys, age 7 and their one year old sister was carjacked while one of their parents had run into the house to grab a baby bottle.

The twins kept punching the carjacker with their fists and a rubber snake until this kidnapper, too, had enough with obnoxious kids.    (Note: Turn the sound down before clicking on the link: The television station has one of those annoying autoplay ads that won't let you stop it)

Yep, all that horseplay does pay off. The kids were uninjured, says ABC news.

Frankly, given these stories, I think police departments should hire kids as an effective crime fighting tool. Feed 'em lots of sugar and let them go after the bad guys.

You bet the streets will be safe if that happens.

ANOTHER Awesome Narvaez Family Version of "Home"

Back in 2011, I blogged about Jorge Narvaez and his young daughter Alexa, who did an awesome cover of the already excellent song "Home" by Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes.
Jorge, Eliana and Alexa Narvaez.

Jorge and Alexa soared to viral video fame with their version of the song, and it even landed them a spot on the show "America's Got Talent," where Alexa proved to be the most charming young girl in America.

Now the Narvaez family is back, with an addition, younger sister Eliana, who joins the group.  They do another version of that same song.

This version has a new poignancy. According to Buzzfeed, Esther Alvarez, who is Jorge's mother, was deported recently because she came to the United States without papers in 1987.

Buzzfeed said she returned to Mexico a few years back so her husband and son, both U.S. citizens could sponsor her for permanent residency. But her application was deined and she has been away from the family since.

From Buzzfeed

"And so when Jorge, Eliana and Alexa sing: "Home, let me come home/Home is wherever I'm with you," they mean it.

The new video is part of a campaign that aims to reunite at least some of the thousands of families that have been separated by an unprecedent wave of deportations."

There's a Twitter campaign called #BringThemHome which is trying to support people who have crossed into the U.S. from Mexico and are seeking asylum.

Usually, you can't get asylum in the United States unless there are "credible threats" against that person in the country they're trying to leave.

The Narvaez family is circulating a petition to let their grandmother back into the United States.

No matter what you feel about the issue, you'll love the Narvaez family's updated version of "Home"

Time To Go To Church! (Don't Worry, The Choir Director is AWESOME!)

Today we're off to a Baptist church service in Kyrgyzstan.

I know you had better things to do with your Friday, but you have to watch the video, if only because the "choir director" will make your day.  Cuteness warning!

3 Children Rescued From Florida Waves But Heartbreaking Circumstance

Dramatic video is circulating today as rescuers struggle to rescue three children from a minivan that authorities said was intentionally driven into high ocean surf in Daytona Beach, Florida.
Rescuers retrieve children from a minivan that
authorities said was deliberately driven into the ocean
in a possible murder/suicide attempt

As you'll see in the video at the bottom of this post, the rescuers managed to get the kids, ages, 3, 9, and 10 out, despite the van being tossed in the waves and nearly pushing the rescuers under the waves.

Television station WESH reported that the kids were screaming their pregnant woman was trying to kill them. She apparently deliberately drove into the ocean in what appeared to be a murder/suicide attempt, according to WESH.

During the rescue, witnesses said the mother was blank faced and didn't say a word. When the two older children were pulled from the van, they started screaming to the rescuers there was still a younger kid inside.

The mother never mentioned the third kid to the rescuers, said witnesses, but thankfully, since the kids screamed about the three year old inside, rescuers were able to return to the van and pull that kid out.

The kids, from South Carolina, were taken to a hospital to be checked out, then will probably be placed with relatives once background checks are complete, says WESH.

The woman was taken to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

I just can't imagine a mental illness so bad that a mother would try to kill her kids like that. But it does happen, obviously.

According to a CNN article, post-partum depression can bring on psychosis, which leads a handful of mothers to kill their children. But in this Florida case, she hadn't had her latest baby yet.

In other cases, it's extreme depression, maybe combined with building pressure of some sort, personal or professional, or internal.

According to CNN:

The mothers might have "'borderline personality disorder a condition marked by impulsive behaviors and instability of moods and emotions,' said (clinical and forensic psychologist Paula) Bruce.

People with this condition have unstable relationships because they go from one extreme to another, treating people with admiration and love, but then directing intense anger toward them.

'Getting rid of the children is just about getting rid of her own pain, not about thinking about the children as separate from her,' she said."

Of course, the challenge is figuring out which mothers will kill their children before they try it. Most mothers, whether they are willing to admit it or not, have had killing their children cross their mind in their worst, most hectic and most tired moments.

That's actually normal, according to the experts. But almost all mothers never follow through, never harm their children and almost immediatly resume being the great parents they are.

But what do you do about the situation like what appears happened in Daytona Beach today.

It's all so sad. Here's the video:

"Much Loved" Old Teddy Bears Offer Poignant Photography, Comfortable Memories

Admit it.
Me, relaxing with my childhood teddy bear and
my favorite childrens'  book.

You're probably an adult, and have been one for a long time.

But chances are, you still have the old teddy bear or other stuffed toy that, when you were little, could not be separated from, EVER.

And I bet you still would never part ways with Teddy. He's in your house somewhere, watching over you, protecting you, making you feel safe just like he did when you were three years old.

Along those lines, a photographer named Mark Nixon put together a book called "Much Loved" a collection of images showing very, very battered teddy bears and similar toys that had been hugged and hugged and hugged in times of childhood stress.

Their owners could never let go of these toys, even well into adulthood, and it's understandable why.

Here's what Nixon had to say about the project on the website BoingBoing:

"......I put the call out for people to bring in their much-loved teddies--the more loved, unwashed, and falling apart the better--to be photographed. I expeted it to be mostly children, but it soon became apparent that the idea appealed very much to adults, and that many of them were still very attached t their teddies. It was as though they had been keeping a long-held secret and could finally tell someone what their teddies really meant to them.

Their strength of feeling took me by surprise. While waiting they would tell some usually funny story about their teddy (How they had nearly lost it at some stage was a common theme) or would speak emotionally about what it meant to them. So the stories and memories became integral to the photographs, adding significance to them and bringing them to life."
Someone's childhood teddy bear
from the photography book "Much Loved"
 by Mark Nixon

I can so relate to the people who had their teddy bears photographed by Nixon. I still have my childhood teddy bear, and I'm 51 years old.

Compared to the teddies in Nixon's photographs, mine's in pretty good shape. He still has his two golden eyes, and a brown button nose. His fur is matted with age, the bottoms of his white feet are dirty and his mouth is misshapen.

When I first had him, you could squeeze him and he'd say things like "I love you" but that feature broke a long, long time ago.

My teddy sits on a dresser drawer in the bedroom. He's joined by other child-like toys an items I collected as an adult. There's a stuffed Tasmanian devil, from Looney Tunes, that I bought more than two decades ago.

About four years ago, when I had to go into a surgery, my best friend Denis gave me a children's book called "The Gift Of Nothing" by Patrick McDonnell, which charmingly tells us the best thing we can give to our loved ones is time and friendship.

The book is most assuredly in that place of honor in my bedroom.  When I need a little encouragement after a setback that looms large but is really unimportant,  I read "The Gift of Nothing." It always helps immensely.

Lately, I've been obsessed with Minions from "Despicable Me," those cheerful, yellow pill shaped characters who happily soldier on despite all kinds of outlandish and humiliating mishaps

I'm not the least bit ashamed of having these childhood, or childlike items as important touchstones of my life.

We all have bad moments. We all have stress.  We keep our childhood teddy bears and add to our collection because we remember how we felt when Mom yelled at us, or classmate Susie said we were stinky, or we couldn't get the toy we wanted.
The toy panda bear photographer
Mark Nixon had when he was a kid.
He included it in his book "Much Loved"
which shows poignant images
of peoples' childhood teddy bears

Teddy always made us feel better. We can hug something warm and fuzzy and everything was OK.

That's why a lot of us, as adults, have dogs, isn't it?  If I've had a busy, stressful day, I'll collapse onto the couch. Jackson the Cocker Spaniel will run up, leap up onto my lap and tell me to start giving him a back rub.

Yeah, it feels good to him, but it feels good to me, too. The backrub I give Jackson soothes me more than it soothes him.

It makes me feel like I did when I hugged my teddy bear as a toddler. I bet the you go through the same thing with your dog or cat, if you're lucky enough to have them in your house.

After a few minutes of back rubbing, Jackson leaps off my lap, deposits himself on the floor next to his favorite toy, looks at me, bright eyed and tail wagging and says "Woof!"

That means it's time to play, and chasing Jackson around the house with his toy buffalo or toy cow makes both of us feel great and erases any last vestiges of stress.

Just like when I was a three year old, and Teddy and I, climbing a small hill outside,  pretended we were conquering Everest.

So yes, all adults should have comforting playmates. They could be intelligent beings, like my dog Jackson, or an old teddy bear, or a children's book.

Some people might say clinging to such things is insane.

I say it's the most sane thing any adult could do.

Tumblr Site Documents Multiple Reasons Why Toddler Is Crying, Hilariously

It's every parent's dreadful routine. Their toddlers cry constantly. For any reason.

Any parent can get frustrated by that, but one father has a sense of humor. He started a Tumblr site, "Reasons My Son is Crying," which is just a series of photos of the kid crying, with a caption under each photo explaining why he was crying at the moment the photo was taken.
The crying toddler in "Reasons My Son
Is Crying."

The site is strangely hilarious, and it's a fun time waster to go through and count the zillions of reasons a toddler cries.

Among them:

"I wouldn't let him drag the snow shovel into the house."

In a photo with him the bath tub:  "I wouldn't let him drink bath water."

"His brother's boots don't fit."

In a photo of him crying near a pond: "I wouldn't let him drown in this pond."

"I closed the refrigerator door."

"The milk isn't juice."

"Grandma wouldn't let him spill his ice water all over her and the table."

"We suggested he play with a train."

"I didn't show him a picture on my phone quickly enough. And yes, they were pictures of him crying."

This site will continue to grow, as it looks, so keep looking for more strange reasons to cry.

When Adorable Muppets Turn Nasty

Almost everybody loves the Muppet named Elmo. He comes off as just such a sweetheart. He's kind, curious, compassionate, funny. What's not to like?

Well, when somebody with questionable mental stability starts dressing up as Elmo and spouts creepy anti-Semitic rants at unsuspecting families, it gets ugly.
The guy in New York who dresses
up like Elmo and spouts awful stuff
Photo from the N.Y. Times

That's the problem people are facing in New York City. Apparently, people dress up as beloved children-centric characters in Central Park to entertain families, pose for pictures and maybe get some cash as a reward.

Most of the time, this works. The characters are charming, the children are delighted, some people make a little money and smiles rule the day.

Except when you've got the ranting Elmo, the scary Elmo, the unstable Elmo, which creates an awful collision of free speech rights, the rights of families to protect children from hate speech, not to mention the question of who has the rights to the Elmo image.

For their part, the Sesame Workshop, the educational nonprofit behind beloved Sesame Street characters like Elmo,  says it doesn't condone any unauthorized representations of its characters from anybody, well intentioned or not.

New York City's scary Elmo, who identifies himself as Adam Sandler, doesn't seem too worried about the niceties of copwrite and image. By the way, Sandler is not that Sandler. He's not the popular, and apparently stable comedian.

The Sandler Elmo was detained earlier this summer after going off on a scary rant in Central Park, according to media reports There's a few YouTube videos out there of him squawking about Jews in his Elmo outfit, which quite understandably is incredibly unsettling for kids and their parents.

Here's one of the videos of Scary, anti-semitic Elmo. Warning: language is kinda harsh:

Scary Elmo was released soon afterwards and was back in Central Park. According to the New York Times account, Sandler has a pretty sketchy past, which would give any parent pause.

The June New York Times story about Sandler alleges he once ran a pornographic Web site in Cambodia called "Welcome to Rape Camp" and there were insinuations that Sandler might have been involved in the sexual assault of underaged girls, though no charges have ever been brought.

Scary Elmo is apparently back, and persistent. Sandler was arrested last month around Times Square for another anti-Semitic rant while in his Elmo outfit.

It appears New York might not get rid of its Scary Elmo anytime soon. You can't just make people shut up. If somebody doesn't want mental health couseling, which Sandler apparently does not want, you usually can't make him

People can pretty much say what they want, under the First Amendment.  You can pretty much dress up as a cartoon character and spout all kinds of nonsense. I suppose the Sesame Workshop could go after Sandler, but the associated litigation and unpleasant media attention would distract from their family friendly reputation, even if they are legally and ethically right.

So, this is not an easy problem to solve.

It's sad that families have to be afraid, or at least wary of people dressed up as fun childrens' characters. The frightening thing is most people are blissfully unaware of Sandler's ickiness.

That point was amply illustrated in The Times June article. It quoted a mother thinking kindly of her daughter and meeting Sandler in his Elmo costume. The mom says:  "Will you be here tomorrow? She loves Elmo."

Kid Dances Incredibly, Meditates on Bullying, While Another Kid Just Suffers.

Every once in awhile, I'll share in this blog a video of a really cool, talented dancer doing his or her stuff.  I'm kinda fascinated with great dancers. I guess it's to make up for my dancing abilties, which would remind one of a rat with epilepsy.

This video one is different.

Yes, the kid's dancing is incredible. Supposedly he's 12, but the control he has over his body is just amazing, like he's been practicing for 30 years.
But the video tells a story of bullying, of suffering, of people around kids who don't have their best interests at heart. You want to believe the story line, that the kid perseveres through the awfulness, and finds his mojo in dance. So much so that other people come around to him.

Happily ever after.

The video is really a work of art, not just because of the dancing.

Now for a reality check. The video above is a fictional storyline. Inspiring, beautiful, artful, yes. And the dancing is certainly real. But real life, unfortunately, doesn't always end well. I hate to be so depressing, but there you go.

The reason I'm being Debbie Downer is the video below. Because as far as I can tell it's real life. And it's far from pretty or inspiring or hopeful.

Apparently, some shoppers in a Vineland, N.J. Walmart heard an awful mother yelling at her daughter. Supposedly, you could hear it all over the store, and it lasted a long time.

As everybody seems to do nowadays, somebody whipped out a video recorder, and caught the mother in what looks like a deliberate attempt to make the young girl take a nasty fall from a shopping cart.

It's painful to watch, but do it anyway. It's a sad commentary on what looks to be a little girl's lousy childhood:

As people confront the woman, she says "I didn't mean to do that one."

That one, lady? Does that mean you regularly pull mean, injury causing abuse on your young daughter? Is it a coincidence there's a pink cast on the girl's arm? Or did you cause it?

In the video, you see people who saw the incident confront the wicked mother. Those confrontations are well meaning of course. What are you supposed to do when you see something like that?

But it escalates, and the mother who pulled the cart out from under her daughter makes excuses, and resorts to yelling, out of control. That's what bullies do to discourage people who confront them.

While this is going on, look at the daughter. The mother makes gestures to comfort her, but it looks fake, and the girl knows it.  All the yelling from everybody makes her an embarrassing center of attention, and she just wants to fade away.  If anybody in the world needed a hug, a safe place, the girl is the one.

She knows that, probably, she's not going to be rescued. And since everybody made a big deal out of the abuse, she knows she will get more of it at home. It will be her fault, of course, at least in her mother's twisted view.

I haven't been able to find out what happened to the girl and her mother.

Maybe I'm assuming everything incorrectly, but to me, that's how things usually work out, unfortunately.

What will happen to that girl?  Somehow, I doubt it will be a Hollywood ending, like the kid in the dance video who finds joy in his talent. No matter  how smart or talented the real little girl is in that sad video from Vineland, New Jersey, there's no escape, or so it seems.

Will she have the strength to make it to adulthood? Will she be a damaged adult, one who either shrinks from the world or becomes an abuser herself, because that's the only thing she knows?  Or was this just a rare, bad moment,?

And will she find the strength to soar, like the kid in the dance video? I sure hope so.

Parents Ruin Everything, Including Easter

The latest salvo on some parents war on their childrens' happiness was the recent cancellation of an Easter egg hunt in Colorado

It seems some parents, wanting to give their children every advantage, of course, raided the field where the eggs were to retrieve them for their spawn, so that the kids could feel good about collecting the most eggs. Or something.

The article refers to "helicopter parents," the ones that hover and do everything for their kids, micromanage them, make all their decisions, I guess it's to insulate them from the normal bumps and bruises of life.

Each generation of parents makes some sort of trendy mistake. I guess helicopter parenting is this generation's burden.

I know I'm preaching where I have no qualifications. I'm not a dad myself. And I've always said I think child abuse is appalling, so therefore I'm not a parent.

But I have to wonder if there's so many kids whose parents did everything for them, intervened everywhere for them, how will they fend for themselves?  Some don't ever stop, as I hear stories of parents accompanying adult children to job interviews, college classes and the like. But that doesn't leave the kids looking so impressive, does it?

Plus, when these parents are gone and the adult fledglings are lost at sea for not being able to live on their own, will it be old, childless farts like me who have to step in to the parenting role at work, on the street, in my neighborhood?

What if these people end up so dependent, so incapable of making their own decisions because they never learned to, that we can't count on them for anything?
